A few things: Fiore has been nailed there for about 100 years, and he NEVER stopped his blabbering during this time... so his crewmates were quite annoyed. But they couldn't just dump him, because the captain (who is the type who holds a grudge forever) said that whoever freed Fiore would take his place as figurehead.
Also, Arcane Maelstroms are a phenomenon that happens where Arcane energies abunds: they are small areas where the Arcane magic is incredibly concentrated, and touching them has umpredictable (and almost always lethal) effects.
